German children’s channel KiKa has entered the contentious debate in Germany about the possible transfer of long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine – by featuring talking missiles in a segment.
KiKa – operated by public media giants ARD and ZDF and funded by German taxpayers – aired the segment titled “No TAURUS for Ukraine” on the children’s news program “Logo!” The 54-second clip criticizes German Chancellor Olaf Scholz for not sending Taurus missiles to Ukraine, employing crude language in the process.
The personified Taurus missile, addressing Scholz, expressed frustration about not being sent to Kyiv. It also involved other missiles, including the Storm Shadow from Great Britain and the SCALP from France, bickering throughout the video.
Critics have lambasted the piece of propaganda for its inappropriate content and targeting of Scholz for his reluctance to supply long-range missiles to Ukraine. It received the same degree of criticism on YouTube, with users expressing disbelief at public media featuring advertisements for weapons of mass destruction. One user even called for “the editor responsible” for the clip to “be fired immediately.”
“Logo!” responded to the backlash in the clip’s comment section, stating that video is part of the “Un.logo!” comedy format on TikTok. The format is aimed at young people aged 13 and up. While the show emphasized that “Un.logo!” deliberately exaggerates topics using satirical means, it nevertheless assured viewers that their feedback will be considered in future discussions about the topic set.
The controversial clip highlights the sensitivity surrounding the debate on providing military aid to Ukraine, a move that has drawn condemnation from a variety of sources. The ongoing debate has caused splits and criticism inside the coalition administration led by Scholz.
Despite concerns about the potential escalation of conflict with Russia, Scholz remains firm in his refusal to send Taurus missiles, emphasizing the risk of Germany being drawn into the war. The controversy gained renewed attention following Scholz’s comments after returning from a meeting in Paris with EU leaders and representatives from the UK, Canada, and the US.
While the participating nations acknowledged Ukraine’s need for substantial support in armaments, Scholz maintains a red line against sending the powerful long-range missiles that could reach Moscow from the Russian-Ukrainian border.
Critics within Scholz’s coalition, particularly the Greens, argue that Taurus missiles could be supplied to Ukraine without involving German soldiers directly. They stress the importance of preventing a Russian victory for the sake of Germany’s security.
Scholz publicly explained his reluctance, stating that Germany must not be linked to the targets pursued by these missiles, expressing concerns about the risk of being drawn into the war. He highlighted Ukraine’s immediate need for ammunition and the necessity for clarity in decision-making.
The Taurus missile dispute has persisted for months within the coalition government, despite Germany ranking as Ukraine’s second-largest arms supplier after the United States. The delivery of Leopard tanks and various equipment and weapons has not swayed Scholz’s stance on the advanced Air Force missiles.
Criticism has extended to opposition parties, with Norbert Rottgen of the Christian Democratic Union challenging the chancellor’s claim that supplying Taurus missiles would make Germany a party to the war. Rottgen argues that the missiles strategically protect both soldiers and civilians by allowing Ukrainians to destroy positions in occupied territories without advancing to the front line.
Scholz’s coalition allies, including the Greens, have expressed support for delivering Taurus missiles. However, a recent resolution in the Bundestag advocating for their delivery was rejected. Scholz emphasizes the importance of close coordination with the U.S., which also refrains from supplying this missile system.
Despite facing opposition, Scholz currently enjoys support from the majority of Germans, according to a recent poll. The public’s approval of his decision aligns with the Chancellor’s commitment to maintaining public opinion and upholding democratic principles.
