During his recent address to the Russian Federal Assembly – the country’s national legislature – President Vladimir Putin confirmed the deployment of advanced hypersonic missiles in the special military operation against Ukraine.
Originally unveiled in 2018, the Kinzhal and Tsirkon hypersonic missiles have reportedly successfully targeted significant Ukrainian military assets.
Other sources have confirmed the use of the Tsirkon hypersonic missiles. In early February, the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Forensic Expertise confirmed that Russia had used the Tsirkon, known alternatively as the Zircon.
Oleksandr Ruvin, director of the Ukrainian government-backed institute, claimed that the Tsirkon was fired at an area of Ukraine that had no military facilities and only civilians and civilian infrastructure.
Ruvin claimed that the organization analyzed missile fragments and components of the Tsirkon missile, although the hypersonic missile’s microelectronics were “poorly preserved.” He also claimed that Russia has been exaggerating the hypersonic missile’s capabilities.
“Significant fragmentation of the missile makes identification difficult, but we can already say that the weapon does not meet the tactical and technical characteristics declared by the enemy,” Ruvin added.
The Tsirkon was first unveiled in 2018 and initially designed as a hypersonic anti-ship missile. It has since undergone a lot of testing and can now be used as a land-attack missile and can also be launched from Russian frigates and submarines.
“Tsirkon is a weapon that allows us to say that we can overcome any enemy defence,” said Boris Obnosov, general director of missile manufacturer Tactical Missiles Corporation, the main private firm responsible for producing the Tsirkon.
In his speech, Putin also announced the deployment of other advanced weapons systems, including the Avangard strategic hypersonic glide vehicle and the Peresvet laser system.
Furthermore, Putin promised to release footage showcasing Russia’s stockpile of RS-28 Sarmat super heavy intercontinental ballistic missiles in their silos.
“Those systems have confirmed their high – unique, I might say without exaggeration – specifications,” said Putin of the weapons systems. (Related: Putin takes a ride in a NUCLEAR-capable bomber that can reach the U.S.)
He also revealed that trials for the 9M730 Burevestnik nuclear-powered and nuclear-capable cruise missile were nearing completion. The same can be said for the Status-6 “Poseidon” underwater drone. Putin spoke glowingly of the specifications of these weapons systems and their alleged unique capabilities.
Despite acknowledging the possibility of negotiations on strategic stability with the United States, he expressed concern about the deteriorating relationship between the two superpowers and accused American ruling elites of openly engaging in hostile actions against Russia. He also claimed that Russian development of high tech weapons is in response to America having similar advanced weapons systems.
“We are dealing with a state whose ruling elites are openly taking hostile actions against us,” he said. “Do they seriously intend to discuss strategic stability with us while trying to inflict ‘strategic defeat on the battlefield,’ as they put it themselves, on Russia?”
Putin criticized the diplomatic stance of Washington as “hypocritical” and suggested it served to pursue outcomes solely advantageous to the United States.
