A Ukrainian blogger has called for the genocide of the Russian people, insisting that the country and its population must be “wiped off the face of the Earth.”
Blogger and activist Melaniya Podolyak made the calls via a Jan. 14 tweet, after a missile attack destroyed an apartment block in the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro. She initially pointed her finger at the Russians for the attack, but a later report revealed that the attack was actually a case of friendly fire. Nevertheless, Podolyak remained adamant in her call for genocide.
“It’s absolutely fair for me to wish for all Russians and Russia to be wiped off the face of the Earth,” she tweeted. “It’s not hate speech, it’s not horrible of me, it’s just fair.” Podolyak also shared a picture of the destroyed apartment block alongside her tweet, which has now been deleted as it “violated Twitter rules.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky initially stated that the building suffered a direct hit from a Russian missile. But Aleksey Arestovich, an adviser to the president, later admitted that Ukrainian anti-air weapons shot down the missile – causing it to hit the apartment building. The aide to Zelensky later stepped down in connection with his blunder.
Podolyak’s follow-up tweet on Jan. 15 dubbed the former adviser as a “moron.”
Other Twitter users hammered the blogger and activist for being “pro-ethnic cleansing,” to which she replied with expletives. She also threatened users who allegedly obtained her address.
“Cool, now these bots threaten me by letting me know they have my address. Well, if you know that, you also know [you’re] in for a big treat – unless you want to waste an entire missile on me, which is going to change nothing for you,” Podolyak tweeted alongside a picture of her holding a shotgun.
Prior to her call to exterminate the Russian people, Podolyak – a former staffer in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s unicameral parliament – had previously appeared in U.S. mainstream media outlets. NBC News described her as a “political activist” demanding the West sends heavy weapons to Kyiv. Fox News, meanwhile, described her as a “media consultant” calling for sanctions on Moscow.
This was not the first time a Ukrainian personality openly called for the extermination of the Russians.
In March 2022, television host Fakhrudin Sharafmal called on Ukrainians to destroy the Russian nation by killing their children. The presenter for Ukraine’s Channel 24 even quoted Nazi Party official Adolf Eichmann, who claimed that a nation can be destroyed if its children are killed. After initially escaping the war, Eichmann was arrested in Argentina and executed by the state of Israel in June 1962.
“I allow myself to quote Eichmann, who said that in order to destroy a nation, you must destroy, first of all, its children,” said Sharafmal. “Because if you kill their parents, the children will grow up and take revenge. By killing children, they will never grow up and the nation will disappear.” (Related: Ukrainian TV host quotes Nazi war criminal in impassioned call to kill Russian children.)
“The Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot eliminate Russian children as this is prohibited by the rules of war and various conventions, including the Geneva Conventions. But I am not a member of the Armed Forces, and when I have an opportunity to do away with Russians, I will definitely do this. I adhere to the Eichmann doctrine and will do everything in my power to ensure that you and your children never live on this Earth.”
Sharafmal later apologized for his on-air remarks, claiming that he uttered those while driven by the pain of loss and grief over his friend’s death during the conflict.
